Introducing The Drugs and Alcohol Use Career Pathway
Are you someone who has lived or living experience related to drug or alcohol use?
Are you interested in gaining accredited qualifications, training, and volunteering opportunities?
If you answered yes to both, this new pathway could be for you!
The Qualification
The level 1 (provided by DACES) Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training is available online/county-wide. This nationally recognised qualification starts on Monday 21st October 2024 from 6.30pm and will last around 2 hours weekly run over a total of 8 weeks. A second opportunity to access the qualification is also being offered from Wednesday 6th November 2024.

Wednesday 6th November 2024 - (sessions are on Wednesday at 6.30-8.30pm on Microsoft Teams: 6th Nov, 13th Nov, 20th Nov, 27th Nov, 4th Dec, 11th Dec and final sessions on 18th Dec 2024 – due to the 8 week date falling at Christmas, this will be condensed over 7 weeks).
Level 1 Qualification Criteria:
The learner must:
- Have access to a computer
- Have an email address
- Be able to use Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Word
- Be able to commit every week for 8 weeks to 2 hours of evening online learning (6.30pm-8.30pm) one day each week, with approx. 20 mins of homework.
*If someone has not recently completed any adult education qualifications, they will need to attend a one off local ‘Making Choices’ face to face session with DACES (which we will support) so an assessment of readiness for the course can be completed (this is to ensure that if you’re not quite ready you’ll be supported to attend other qualifications beforehand, e.g. English or technology) - Information can be found in the FAQ section.

Why develop a lived experience pathway?
The Public Health Substance Use Team in Derbyshire have a strategic ambition to build a ‘home-grown’ specialist treatment and recovery workforce for Derbyshire. This means creating pathways and opportunities where people affected by substance use can channel their lived and living experience into careers within the local system.
What opportunities will I experience on the pathway?
The pathway aims to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to support a career within the sector. This includes opportunities to volunteer and apply the learning into practice (with support and supervision).
Who is the pathway for?
For people with lived and living experience from substance use. People who may identify as being in ‘recovery’ from substance use. For people affected by substance use (either through their own use or those of another).

Will the pathway lead to a paid job?
The pathway aims to prepare the participant for a future career within the sector. A paid job isn’t guaranteed at the end of the pathway however the skills, learning and opportunities provided are designed to support obtaining a paid career eventually.
Who is delivering the pathway?
The pathway takes a partnership approach between: Derbyshire County Council, Phoenix Futures, Derbyshire Addictions Advice Service, and Derbyshire Adult and Community Education Service.
